Indian wedding sarees are a lot cheaper than US ones – Recode
Indian weddings are cheaper than those in the US and even cheaper than weddings in China, a survey suggests.
The survey by research firm IHS Markit and Zacks Investment Research, which was conducted between February 27 and April 1, found the average price of a wedding in India was $7,622.
It is less than half the price of US weddings in the same month, and about three-quarters less than Chinese ones.
Indian weddings are also cheaper than the average of US ones, with an average of $9,634 for a one-day wedding, compared to $22,066 for a three-day one.
However, in contrast to Chinese weddings, where couples typically spend $35,000, Indian weddings have a median price of just $6,200.
IHS Markits chief Asia economist Nouriel Roubini said the study showed Indian weddings were cheaper than many of their Chinese counterparts.
“This shows that India is a more affordable destination for wedding couples,” he said.
India’s weddings are typically held in temples and in areas where people are less likely to wear their traditional garb.
While Indian weddings generally cost more than those held in China and other Asian countries, it was not clear whether that was because of higher costs or a lack of awareness among Chinese tourists about the quality of the food and services available in the country.
China’s traditional wedding is held in public, where there are a greater number of traditional costumes and flowers, according to a report by the Chinese Cultural Tourism and Tourism Information Bureau.
